FAQ
All types of plastic, including PP, are degraded if left exposed for a long time outdoors. However, currently there are UV protection stabilizers (available as optional items for Core Case products) that can be added to the raw materials used to manufacture plastic boxes. These substances protect the boxes and allow them to resist adverse weather conditions for a longer period. In any case, we do not recommend leaving the core sample boxes outside, regardless of the material from which they are made (metal, wood, plastic or other material), since such exposure may change the characteristics of the boxes and even the samples.
No, as they have holes in the form of drains between each partition wall, in order to avoid the accumulation of water.
Plastic durability has always been the subject of many discussions. However, we estimate a durability of over 20 years, if the boxes are properly stored (in covered warehouses, in order to avoid exposure to adverse weather conditions and with a compartment for each box). If the boxes are stacked up on top of each other for a long period, shorter durability is expected (about 5 years). This is especially true at the base of the stack (first two boxes), where the pressure exerted is greatest, and ruptures and/or cracks may occur in the corners of the boxes. This process should be accelerated even more if the boxes are exposed to the sun and do not have a UV stabilizer in their composition.
The plastic cases are manufactured with an inert material (polypropylene – PP); therefore, they are not harmed by cleaning detergents and HCl, which are commonly used by geologists during the description of the core samples.
Yes, several tests and simulations have been carried out (tensile, bend, tension, impact and hardness tests) focusing on the storage and stacking capacity, resistance and durability of plastic boxes. However, when it comes to duration, this estimate is difficult to specify, as it depends on the culture of the company/user in relation to the manner of use.
People must bear in mind that the boxes cannot be handled by the flaps or in a careless way, nor can they be tossed in the vehicle bed without any concern for their integrity.
As for the measures, they follow the exact same dimensions of the NQ2, HQ and BQ wooden boxes (in the future), aiming at meeting the standards of Brazilian and foreign companies.
Although it is possible to make almost anything out of plastic nowadays, tag holder with fitting from top to bottom would imply a technical difficulty when making the mold due to the extraction direction of the piece. Not that it is impossible to do so; in fact, there is a possibility. But this would require greater investment in tools (molds), in addition to possibly weakening the structure of the mold. It would also require a larger injection press during the manufacture of the boxes, due not only to the larger size of the mold but also to its weight. Therefore, for technical and economic reasons, we decided to make the tag holder this way. In order solve the question of the tag falling, we suggest the use of metal fasteners (rivets, for instance) or high-performance adhesives (Araldite, for instance). Another alternative would be to manufacture high-adhesion adhesives to enter data and customized information, according to the user’s needs.
The internal partition walls of the plastic boxes are corrugated in order to homogeneously distribute their weight when they are stacked, thus contributing to their resistance and durability. Moreover, the corrugated partition walls facilitate the grip when removing cores during measurement, description and sampling activities.
